TRAINING FACILITIES
In Trondheim, Norway SMS presently operate a total of 7 ship simulators. Three of them are full mission simulators with complete bridge and state of the art visual systems. One simulator is of a compact type and the last three are used for dynamic position (DP) training.
All SMS ship simulators are built with the same high quality program base. The core of a simulator is the mathematical model of a simulated ship. SMS is so confident about the model quality that we only have named ships in our simulator. The last part of the test procedure for a new ship model, is to let the captain of the actual ship test it to be sure it behaves like the real ship. The models used for DP training are so accurate, that we can use the same software in the DP as it is onboard the actual ship.
The visual system creates a high fidelity world with real time 3D geometry-sea at 60 Hz. The system is built up of high-end computers running as diskless Linux clients. This guarantees a high performance system combined with high reliability and low maintenance costs. The computers used for the visual system are renewed at least every second year to take advantage of the great advances in modern 3D technology.
